A21 Masons Hill is back under temporary lights to 2 November and Cray Avenue loses a lane to 13 November. No Charing Cross trains on 14 and 15 November.

Bromley roadworks come from three different road authorities at once: Transport for London on the red routes, the council on everything else, and the utility companies digging under both. Add a rolling resurfacing programme and the railway, and the picture gets hard to follow. This page keeps it straight. It covers what is genuinely disrupting journeys now, what is coming in the next fortnight, and the live maps that always have the current answer. It also carries the evergreen facts: who runs which road, and where to park at the stations.

Updated 30 October: TfL no longer lists the A21 Masons Hill as closed. Since the evening of 29 October its record shows temporary traffic lights in all directions at Homesdale Road, still listed until 2 November. TfL’s road and bus records, Southeastern’s notices to 15 November and National Highways’ closure list dated 29 October were all re-read this morning. All times are UK time.

The A21 Masons Hill is open again, under temporary lights. TfL’s record for the burst water main at Homesdale Road now shows signals in all directions rather than a northbound closure, and lists the work until 23:00 on Monday 2 November. Its bus diversion notices have not been withdrawn, and the 320 is running a reduced service. Elsewhere, a southbound lane on Cray Avenue (A224) in St Mary Cray stays closed until 13 November. Tonight, late Hayes trains stop at Bromley South. The two weekends after that are clear on the railway. Then on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November no Southeastern trains run to or from Charing Cross, Waterloo East or Cannon Street, and on the Sunday buses replace trains from Lewisham to Orpington via Chislehurst.

What is on the roads right now (checked 30 October 2026)

TfL’s records list these jobs in or on the edge of the borough on the morning of Friday 30 October.

  • A21 Masons Hill at Homesdale Road, Bromley (BR2). Temporary traffic lights in all directions after a burst water main. TfL changed the record at about 21:45 on 29 October and now reports no delays. The work is still listed until 23:00 on Monday 2 November (record TIMS-237056). The background is in our story on the closure.
  • Cray Avenue (A224) at Cray Valley Road, St Mary Cray (BR5). One southbound lane closed until 18:00 on Friday 13 November for UK Power Networks, in place since 30 September (record TIMS-235686). TfL says delays are possible.
  • Station Road (A232) at Tubbenden Lane, Orpington (BR6). Temporary traffic lights for water works until 17:00 today, Friday 30 October (record TIMS-236594). TfL reports no delays.
  • Kent Gate Way (A2022), northbound between Gravel Hill and Lodge Lane. This TfL job sits on the Croydon side of the boundary but is listed under both boroughs. The road is closed northbound until 23:59 tonight, and again from midnight on Saturday 31 October until 04:00 on Monday 2 November (record TIMS-236199). TfL says to use another route.

Buses: Masons Hill notices still up, 320 reduced

TfL’s bus disruption list carried 57 notices London-wide on the morning of 30 October. For the borough:

  • Masons Hill. The notices TfL issued early on 27 October are still listed. They divert the 61, 261, 320 and 358 away from the stops between Wendover Road and Bromley Common / The Crown, the 208 away from the stops between Wendover Road and Southborough Lane / Blackbrook Lane or The Fairway, and the 336 away from Hawthorne Road to Queens Gardens, in both directions. TfL has not issued a notice saying they have ended, even though the road record has changed.
  • Route 320: one bus an hour between Bromley South and The Keston Mark. A TfL notice from 29 October says the 320 is running a reduced service between Bromley and Biggin Hill “due to delays in the Masons Hill area as Thames Water works continue”.
  • St Mary Cray High Street: B14 and R4 diverted. Notices from about 12:35 on 29 October divert both routes via Cray Avenue and Kent Road “due to an emergency services incident”. They were still listed this morning. TfL gives no more detail, and the Met has published nothing about it.
  • Wheathill Road, Penge (SE20): route 356 diverted via Elmers End Road and Croydon Road for utility works, from the evening of 29 October.

Check the TfL bus status page before you rely on any of these stops.

Orpington High Street: another outlet reported a part-closure of the High Street with nine bus routes diverted on 19 October. Neither TfL’s road list nor its bus list has carried any Orpington High Street record since, and the council has published no notice, so we cannot confirm it.

Trains: tonight, then 14 and 15 November

Tonight, Friday 30 October, from 23:20: Charing Cross to Hayes trains run to Bromley South instead after New Beckenham. Accessible buses run from Bromley South to Hayes, calling at Beckenham Junction and all stations from Clock House to Hayes (Southeastern, 26 to 30 October).

Saturday 31 October, Sunday 1 November and Saturday 7 November are clear. Southeastern’s notices list no work on the borough’s lines on those days (31 October, 1 November, 7 November).

Week of 2 November: on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday the 00:10 and 00:40 Victoria to Gillingham trains leave at 00:12 and 00:42 and run non-stop to Rochester. For Bromley South, Southeastern says to use the 00:10 and 00:40 Victoria to Swanley trains instead (Southeastern, 2 to 6 November).

Sunday 8 November: Hayes line buses until about 09:15. Charing Cross to Hayes trains run only as far as Lewisham until then, and accessible buses run between Lewisham and Hayes. The first all-stations trains are the 08:51 Charing Cross to Hayes, which leaves at 08:59, and the 09:41 Hayes to Charing Cross (Southeastern, 8 November).

Monday 9 to Thursday 12 November, late evenings on the Hayes line:

  • the 22:51 to 23:21 Charing Cross to Hayes trains run to Bromley South after New Beckenham
  • after 23:30 no trains run from London to the Hayes line, and the last one stops at Lewisham
  • from 23:05 accessible buses run between Bromley South and Hayes; the last one starts back from Lewisham at 00:31
  • trains from Hayes towards London are not affected

Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November: no trains to or from Charing Cross, Waterloo East or Cannon Street. Southeastern says a limited service runs to London Bridge, with most trains sent to Victoria or Blackfriars instead. The Underground accepts tickets between those London termini at no extra cost. Resurfacing: eleven council jobs listed for October

The council’s 2026/27 programme gives a start month for each road. Re-read on 30 October, it still lists these jobs for October 2026:

Bucks Cross Road and patching on Cudham Lane South follow in November. The two principal-road schemes are later: Anerley Hill and Anerley Road from March 2027 and Sevenoaks Way (A224) between Broomwood Road and Leesons Hill from November 2027. Homesdale Road, Court Road at Chelsfield and the High Street at Green Street Green, all on the earlier version of the page, no longer appear (planned carriageway and footway works). The council gives months, not days. Resurfacing usually means short overnight or off-peak closures, and the exact dates go up on site signs and the live maps below.

Plaistow Lane: the council still has not said. It closed the road in mid-July after a void was found near the Plaistow Green roundabout, and said then that it hoped to reopen within days (Bromley Council, 13 July). That page is unchanged on 11 October and the council’s news list has nothing newer on it. TfL’s live records show no closure and no bus diversion there, which points to the road being back in use, but the council has not confirmed it.

Driving out: Dartford and M25 junction 3

National Highways’ seven-day closure list is dated Thursday 29 October and runs to Wednesday 4 November. For drivers from the borough:

  • The Dartford West Tunnel closes northbound overnight, 21:00 to 05:30, on Thursday 29, Friday 30 October and Monday 2 to Wednesday 4 November.
  • The Dartford East Tunnel closes northbound from 22:00 on Saturday 31 October to 06:00 on Sunday, and from 22:30 on Sunday 1 November to 05:30 on Monday. There is no access over the crossing for vehicles over 4.8m.
  • M25 junction 3 at Swanley, where the A20 meets the motorway: the north quadrant of the roundabout closes from 23:00 on Saturday 31 October to 06:00 on Sunday, and the south quadrant from 22:30 on Sunday 1 November to 05:30 on Monday.
  • The M25 clockwise between junctions 2 and 3 closes overnight on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 October, and the clockwise link from junction 3 to the M20 eastbound closes overnight on Monday 2 November.

The long A282 night-works order. National Highways has given notice of about seven months of overnight work on the A282 between junction 2 (A2) and junction 30 (A13), starting on or after 7 October, with closures allowed 20:30 to 06:00 Sunday to Thursday and 20:00 to 10:00 on Friday and Saturday (notice NH/SE/2026/A282/70, Public Notice Portal).

Who runs which road

This is the fact that saves the most wasted phone calls. Two of the borough’s biggest roads are not the council’s at all: they are TfL red routes. The council’s own page spells out the boundaries. They are the A21 from the M25 to the Lewisham boundary at Bromley Hill, and the A232 from Locksbottom (Croydon Road) to the boundary with Croydon at West Wickham High Street. On those, TfL is responsible for roadworks, street lighting, road and pavement maintenance and winter gritting (Bromley Council red routes).

Everything else that is a public road is coordinated by the council. It permits and schedules works by its own contractors and by the utilities: Thames Water, Southern Gas Networks, BT Openreach, Virgin Media and UK Power Networks. All planned works must display a permit board naming who is digging and the permit number. Emergency works such as gas leaks can start before a permit is filed. Unpermitted works can be reported at fix.bromley.gov.uk, and the roadworks line is 0300 303 8658 (Bromley Council roadworks).

The contractor changed this summer. FM Conway took over the council’s highway maintenance work from 1 July 2026 under three contracts worth an estimated £106 million over their life (Bromley Council). The live maps that always have the answer

Roadworks lists date fast; these do not.

  • The council’s roadworks map shows current, planned and live traffic information for the borough, using roadworks.org data (Bromley Council).
  • one.network carries every permitted dig in the borough on a live national map (one.network).
  • TfL traffic status covers the red routes and everything London-wide (tfl.gov.uk/traffic/status), with Tube and rail status alongside.
  • National Highways covers the M25, which brushes the borough’s southern edge at the A21 junction (live travel updates).

Station parking, the evergreen version

If disruption pushes you onto the train, the parking picture at the two town-centre stations does not change often. It is also not what most people assume.

  • Bromley South has no station car park (Southeastern). The nearest large option is the council’s 24-hour multi-storey, The Hill on Beckenham Lane, with 340 spaces, pay by RingGo (Bromley Council).   • Bromley North has an APCOA car park with about 213 spaces (APCOA). APCOA manages station parking across the Southeastern network (Southeastern).

Is the A21 Masons Hill open again?

Has Plaistow Lane reopened?

Bromley Council has published no reopening notice since it closed the road in July, and its July statement is unchanged. TfL’s live records show no road closure and no bus diversion there, but that is not the council confirming anything. Check the live maps before you rely on it.

When is my road being resurfaced?

Who is responsible for the A21 in Bromley?

Transport for London, not the council. The A21 is a red route from the M25 boundary all the way to Bromley Hill, so TfL handles its roadworks, lighting, surfacing and gritting (Bromley Council). The same goes for the A232 between Locksbottom and West Wickham High Street.

How do I report a pothole or unauthorised roadworks in Bromley?

Through the council’s reporting site, fix.bromley.gov.uk, for any road except the two red routes. Legitimate works display a permit board naming the company responsible; works without one are worth reporting. The repair itself is now carried out by FM Conway.
